Canton Bogie Drop
As part of the Transport for Wales (TfW) Core Valley Lines (CVL) transformation programme, Cairn Cross was appointed to design and construct a new, state-of-the-art bogie drop maintenance facility at Canton Depot, Cardiff.
The facility was developed to service and maintain TfW’s new fleet of FLIRT vehicles, including 11 bi-mode and 24 tri-mode units, supporting the long-term modernisation of rail infrastructure across Wales.

Project Details
Our delivery package included:
Detailed design from Stage C through to Stage G
Supply of depot-wide HV ring main backup generators
Track renewal and realignment, including new S&C, buffer stops and integration of a new Depot Protection System
Construction of the maintenance facility using CFA piles for the main structure and secant piles within the bogie pit for enhanced waterproofing
Erection of the steel frame structure and full building cladding
New drainage systems throughout the facility
In-house design and installation of the complete M&E package
Design and installation of a new welfare modular unit
Replacement of switch panels at Substation 3 to power the new facility and futureproof depot capacity
Installation of new rail crossings, Rosehill crossings, concrete hardstanding areas and car park upgrades to provide appropriate site access
