Bristol Carriage Wash Upgrade Completed

Great Western Railway’s St. Phillips Marsh rail maintenance depot unveiled an upgraded carriage wash machine and plant room equipment today, designed and built by Cairn Cross.

Cairn Cross was appointed as the main contractor and replaced several key facilities and systems, including the carriage wash machine, plant room equipment, control system, and effluent reclaim and water recycling plant.

The project was delivered three weeks ahead of scheduled completion and within budget. The new carriage wash improves efficiency and offers Greater Western Railway a more environmentally sustainable train carriage wash. The upgraded water recycling capacity improved by 15%, allowing 85% of the reclaimed water to be recycled.

To commence work, a topo survey and existing services survey were undertaken by Cairn Cross to undertake the decommissioning, removal, and disposal of existing equipment. Drainage cleaning and inspections of GRP flooring, pipework, power, and LED lighting, new wash modules were installed on a new concrete base. New tanks and plant room equipment were supplied to install the new rolling stock carriage wash and a new separator tank was installed onto a new base.

This project represents a significant investment in the infrastructure of the Bristol St. Phillips Marsh Train Depot, and Cairn Cross is committed to delivering high-quality work that will benefit both the depot and the local community.

Today marked the final milestone in the delivery of the Carriage Wash renewal at St. Philips Marsh, with the completion of commissioning activities following a well-delivered construction phase. The machine has now been accepted by GWR and NR asset manager and is available to be energised for entry into service.
