Cairn Cross delivered a comprehensive safety and access improvement scheme within a live rail depot environment, involving the design, supply, and installation of GRP walkways, low-level LED lighting, concrete path edge lining, and safety signage systems.

Project Details

The works were delivered across multiple coordinated packages, including:

  • Design, supply and installation of 200m yellow GRP walkway with low-level LED strip lighting
  • Design, supply and installation of 30m red GRP walkway with low-level LED strip lighting
  • Design, supply and installation of 30m GRP walkway extension to existing infrastructure
  • Design, supply and installation of 102m yellow GRP walkway with concrete access platform base
  • Installation of approx. 4,400m of 2-pack paint line marking to footpath edges, fuel roads, and S-roads
  • Installation of stop car markers and safety signage fixed to existing infrastructure

The Challenge

The project required full planning, procurement, and delivery within a tight programme timeframe while working in a live and fully operational rail depot environment.

The key challenge was coordinating multiple work packages across different areas of the site, each with its own logistical and operational constraints. Careful planning was essential to manage the tight programme, ensure timely procurement of specialist materials, and maintain continuity of depot operations. Works also needed to be carefully sequenced to ensure safe working conditions at all times and avoid disruption to ongoing depot activities.

The Solution

Cairn Cross adopted a structured and proactive approach to ensure the successful delivery of all works. This began with close collaboration with the client and shunter control teams to ensure full operational awareness throughout the project. Detailed site surveys were undertaken, with mapped layouts produced to support accurate planning and installation.

An early procurement strategy was implemented to guarantee that all materials were secured and available on site ahead of programme requirements. Labour, plant, and equipment were carefully planned and coordinated to align with each phase of the works, ensuring efficiency and reducing downtime. The works were then delivered in a phased and controlled manner, allowing GRP walkways, lighting, line marking, and signage installations to be completed safely and with minimal disruption to depot operations.

The Result

The project was successfully delivered on time and within budget, with all works completed safely and without incident.

The completed scheme has significantly improved depot safety and operational efficiency. Clearly defined GRP walkways now provide durable and safe pedestrian routes across the site, while low-level LED lighting enhances visibility in key areas. Extensive line marking and signage have further improved site organisation and strengthened the separation between pedestrian and vehicle movements.

Overall, the project has delivered a safer, more efficient working environment, improving visibility, movement, and compliance across the depot.
