The Challenge

The multifunctional facility at Kings Heath presented a number of access challenges. The site is located within a narrow building area, making the movement of equipment and personnel highly restricted. In addition, road closures of up to six hours required careful scheduling and the creation of alternative route arrangements to maintain operations. Further complexity arose from the depot’s wheel lathe, which experienced intermittent closures over a three-week period, requiring additional planning and coordination.

The Solution

Cairn Cross developed four options for the permanent way (P-Way) design and relocation. These proposals included the realignment of the existing embankment and highway in the area north of the current train care facility. The scope also incorporated service realignment, fencing installation, and the construction of a gabion wall to support the new layout.
