Sheffield LMD Completion

Sheffield LMD completion

Cairn Cross has completed delivering Northern Rail an extension to the existing traincare provision at Sheffield LMD, South Yorkshire, as Principal Designer and Principal Contractor.

Arriva Rail North Ltd increased their servicing capacity at Sheffield Depot.  The train fleet, including class 195’s, class 170s and class 150s diesels in two and three-car configurations, are to be serviced at Sheffield depot, and the existing arrangement needs to be enhanced to allow for the following servicing requirements:

  • Canopies, services, lighting and apron containment each end of the shed
  • Increased fuelling provision
  • AdBlue® provision
  • Additional CET point
  • Increase oil distribution facility

Arriva Rail North Ltd required a packaged offer of a design and construct proposal to deliver the works.

The shed is part of a working depot, and the new works had to allow for continued use of the servicing facilities throughout the project works.

Working as Principal Designer, we designed the extension following the relevant Network Rail standards and agreed with Arriva Rail North LTD before applications.

The extension of the canopy allows for more services to operate within the depot. Cairn Cross delivered a 22-meter extension to the south end canopy and a 5m canopy extension to the north end of the maintenance shed.

The Canopy Extension Works

The existing p-way to the rear of the structure consisted of a 4′ collector trough and side collector troughs with GRP open grid top walkways of varying lengths and stone walkways beyond up to the end of the track.  This southern section was for fuelling operations.

There was further required servicing in fuelling, AdBlue® and controlled Emission Toilet systems (CET) in this area.

We installed a top and side cladded weatherproof canopy with one line of columns on each side of the road.  The proposal was to excavate and install prefabricated reinforcing cages and concrete in sections so that the road was handed back at the end of each shift for stabling.

LED lighting was required along the canopies with designed LUX levels to provide adequate lighting levels to enable servicing tasks in and around the stabled carriages.  The lighting was created following the recommendations within BS EN 12464-2.  Our in-house mechanical and electrical team carried out a power capacity check to ensure sufficient spare power capacity within the shed for the new lighting.

The ground team enhanced the areas with fuel collector trays and GRP walkways along each side of the rail. We replaced the drainage with shallow drainage that connects the new collector trays to the shed drainage.

The north extension added more fuelling, AdBlue and Controlled Emission Toilet systems (CET) capabilities in the depot.

Increased Service Operations

Cairn Cross installed new data-logging and remote monitoring fuelling points to increase productivity and reliability. These were installed in safe locations and connected to the existing fuelling system pipework.

New AdBlue® dispensing facilities was at the shed location. Three new AdBlue® module dispensers with auto shut-off provide the east side of the shed with hose reels positioned such that AdBlue® connected to the fuelling points along the servicing area.  The module dispensers are placed at convenient locations and sited between other plant equipment. The AdBlue system comprises TankWatch contents with logging/ monitoring system and trace heated and lagged AdBlue® 316 stainless steel pipework.

An additional CET point was installed at the south end of the new south canopy.  The pipework ties into the existing pipework within the shed, and new pipework either the current steel framework outside the shed
