United effort to clean up Sheffield’s River Don at Kelham Island Museum
Sheffield, England – A united effort to clean up Sheffield’s River Don by litter picking and clearing reeds in the river and access to the goit, an artificial channel located adjacent to the museum, took place on Wednesday, 4th September.
Nature Restoration
Throughout the day, volunteers cleared overgrown plants and removed litter to create clearer waterways, which allows for better circulation, prevents stagnation, and promotes aquatic health.
The project aims to create a more diverse and inviting environment for wildlife, including insects, birds, and small mammals.
Removing excess vegetation helps prevent silt buildup, allowing better waterflow and preventing potential flood risks.
Cairn Cross, a leading Yorkshire rail depot contractor, encouraged employees to use their corporate volunteer days to engage with community involvement and improve the natural habitat surrounding Kelham Island Museum.
CECA Construction Members
The volunteers from Cairn Cross, were joined by fellow local construction contractors CML who are part of a new ‘Young Professionals Foundation Group’ by CECA, a representative body for the construction industry.
The young professional members support the group to generate a positive drive in the construction industry, raising awareness, school engagement and career guidance.
Jemma, Regional Director for CECA Yorkshire and Humberside, said, “We’re delighted to have partnered with Riverlution in 2024, and it was great to get hands-on, helping to make this particular area of the River Don cleaner, more accessible and better for local wildlife. Our contractor members in Yorkshire & Humber are incredibly proactive in terms of sustainability and community engagement, and it was fantastic to see support from our friends at Cairn Cross Civil Engineering and CML on-site during the clean-up. We will be back on site to support Riverlution with future events and would encourage others to get involved where possible. A really rewarding day for all involved.’
Riverlution, an environmental organisation, organised the event.
“It’s really rewarding to see the difference we’re making. Even a little bit of effort can go a long way in keeping our local areas and waterways clean and healthy” shared Cairn Cross’s Marketing and Publicity Manager, Ryan.
This environmental initiative aligns with Cairn Cross’s commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The company is dedicated to positively impacting the local community and environment through its operations.
