Works Begin on £4.7m Maintenance Depot for GBRf

Cairn Cross commences work on constructing a new maintenance depot in Peterborough alongside the East Coast Mainline for GB Railfreight (GBRf) valued at £4.7million.

The depot will create around 60 jobs in the local area during construction and a further 20 permanent jobs when the project completes next Summer.

The depot’s construction formally started late November with a ground-breaking event at the GBRf House, Peterborough. Councillor Wayne Fitzgerald (Leader of Peterborough City Council) was in attendance, in addition to John Smith (Chief Executive Officer, GB Railfreight) and Phil Williamson (Managing Director, Cairn Cross).

The new maintenance facility is a 95-metre superstructure shed with two roads, a gantry crane and jacking systems to provide maintenance facilities with Cairn Cross as the main contractor.

The state-of-art maintenance hub will improve safety and reliability across GRBF’s wagon fleet, using smart sensor technology to quickly analyse wagon conditions and identify faults much earlier quickly and accurately.

Phil Williamson, Managing Director, Cairn Cross, said: “Cairn Cross is delighted to have secured this project in partnership with GBRf at the Peterborough maintenance hub. The project will significantly improve the efficiency of rail freight maintenance in Eastern England.”

Lisa Ball, Design Director at Epsilon Design Engineers shared “The Peterborough rail depot has been an excellent project to be part of. The depot requirements offered our team a suite of opportunities when creating the designs for the maintenance shed and sidings. Our expertise in rail infrastructure has been fully demonstrated with the integration of infrastructure builds and fume extraction points.
