St Nicholas Church Retaining Wall Restored
St. Nicholas Church in Bradfield has received its reconstructed retaining boundary stone wall from the Cairn Cross team.

After years of subsidence, the boundary wall collapsed in various sections and was unsafe for pedestrians and road users. Cairn Cross was the main contractor and designer to complete a feasibility study, re-establish the original wall features and reconstruct.
To complete the project, the area was protected from the public to ensure their safety. The wall was deconstructed with extra care and respect taken for the surrounding land due to the nature of its location. Provisions were in place if any archaeological excavations were needed.
To resolve the subsidence, we constructed a 1.5m thick concrete base slab deep along the approximately 20-metre retaining wall length.
The wall itself is a 150mm thick concrete wall. Gabion baskets were added to strengthen the new retaining wall. The backfill material used was granular and self-draining to boost its longevity.
As part of our ‘Planet’ core value, we aim to minimise the effects of our operations within our sites and the local community. Therefore, the Cairn Cross team carefully dismantled the stone wall preserving and assessing each stone before reinstating these back into the reconstructed wall. By doing so, we heavily lowered the potential new construction material usage and restored the wall to its original appearance.
