The Challenge

Cairn Cross modernised the carriage wash facility at Great Western Railway. We delivered a complete upgrade of the wash machinery, plant room equipment, and control systems. The new straight-through wash design features automated, profile-following technology for efficient and thorough cleaning of diverse rolling stock. We also upgraded the effluent reclaim and water recycling systems for enhanced environmental performance.

The Solution

Cairn Cross began the project by conducting a topographical survey and an existing services survey. We then decommissioned, removed, and disposed of the existing equipment. Next, we installed new drainage, pipework, power, and LED lighting on a new concrete base. Finally, we supplied and installed new tanks and plant room equipment for the new rolling stock carriage wash.

TrackPan Solution

To enhance safety, we installed our TrackPan solution, providing secure, walkable access with integrated underfoot drainage. This effectively mitigates slip and spillage hazards.

The Result

The project was delivered on time and within budget despite challenging economic environments. The new carriage wash improves efficiency and offers Great Western Railway a more environmentally sustainable train carriage wash. The upgraded system increased water recycling capacity by 15%, now recycling 85% of the reclaimed water.
